Disintegration is British alternative rock band The Cure’s eighth studio album. The song Pictures Of You was inspired by an incident during the recording of Disintegration at Hook End Manor in Oxfordshire in the autumn of 1988. This was too long for a single piece of vinyl, so the LP edition of the record that you could buy in 1989 lost the tracks Last Dance and Homesick - but anyone who bought the cassette or CD could enjoy all 12 songs.



'Homesick' and 'Last Dance' give a whole new dimension to the experience and the quality is far better than the original, which despite the 25+ minutes for each side, it sounded very good. It was chosen…. This should have been a double album, a great shame that ace tracks like "Last Dance" and "Homesick" were not included on the original vinyl issue. A separate video for the track was made, as Smith told Select magazine in 1991: “The original idea was a Doctor Who video, that's why there's a phone box and a clock, with rooms within rooms.”.

Robert Smith may not have been suffering from the raging nihilism which drove him in the run up to the latter, but the depression that descended upon him during 1988 moved him to write songs such as ‘Prayers For Rain’, ‘Plainsong’ and ‘Closedown’: intense, melancholic anthems garnished with icy synths, ponderous guitar figures and Williams’ tom-heavy drums. There were murmurings that they had done this so their cover would be chosen, I had no opinion on it. This milestone, plus The Cure’s huge worldwide success with their preceding album, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, prompted Smith to write a deep, heartfelt and occasionally gloomy follow-up.

The album that still is just light years away from now.

His depression heightened by the fact he would turn 30 in April 1989, Smith and his fiancée, Mary Poole, moved to a new house in London where Smith began writing a series of new songs on his own.
